February is national heart month. According to the American Heart Association, “cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, remains the leading global cause of death with more than 17.3 million deaths each year.” The heart is a vital organ to keeping our bodies going. To protect and keep your heart healthy, you most likely eat well, exercise, and reduce stress as much as possible.
Similar to the steps you take to protect your heart, there are steps to take to protect your family. A few of them include creating a will, as well as establishing beneficiaries as part of this process. Another is putting a life insurance policy in place that is sure to help your family and prevent them from worry and anxiety should something happen to you.
It’s a scary thing to think about, but it’s an honest reality that one must come to when planning their life, and death, options with their family members. I speak from experience as a college graduate with quite a bit of debt as my education was self-funded with student loans. I realized upon graduation that I was responsible for this debt repayment and so was my co-signer, my dad. What if something happened to me? Those loans just don’t go away even though some people think they do and in rare cases they can. It depends on the type of loan and who funded it to begin with. He would then be responsible for this debt, and I did not want him to bare this burden. I took out a life insurance policy with his name listed as the beneficiary should anything happen to me that covers the total cost of those loans. I wanted to make sure he was protected just as he afforded me the opportunity to go to college as a co-signer.
